Excerpt from Sermon 1. "The Importance of Religious Truth", in multiple forms, made more easily readable, and credits along with some minor unnecessary explanations of methods used by me provided herein.
John xviii 38 - Pilate Saith unto him, What is Truth?
Thirdly, to expose the methods, by which artful or bigoted men endeavour to obscure truth, and adorn falsehood.
One method, by which men recommend falsehood in preference to truth, is by positive assertions of false principles or pretended facts, and contempt or ridicule of what are true.
Weak and ignorant persons are ready to believe, without proof, what they hear asserted by those of superior knowledge and understanding, provided it neither injures their temporal interests, nor contradicts their desires.
Hence we often see in controversy very doubtful propositions taken for granted, unsupported facts boldly asserted, credible testimony slighted or denied, and important truths treated with contempt.
The mischief arising from this practice is very extensive; as innumerable false conclusions may be drawn from erroneous principles and mistaken facts, and men are with difficulty convinced, that they have hitherto been deceived in what they looked upon as axioms and uncontroverted truths.

Thirdly, to expofe the methods, by which artful or bigoted men endeavour to obfcure truth, and adorn falfhood.
One method, by which men recommend falfhood in preference to truth, is by pofitive affertions of falfe principles or pretended fafts, and contempt or ridicule of what are true. Weak and ignorant perfons are ready to believe, without proof, what they hear aflerted by thofe of fuperior knowledge and underftanding, provided it neither injures their temporal intereft, nor contradidts their defires. Hence we often fee in controverfy very doubtful propofitions taken for granted, unfupported fadls boldly aflerted, credible teftimony flighted or denied, and important truths treated with contempt. The mifchief arifing from this pradice is very extenfive; as innumerable falfe conclufions may be drawn from erroneous principles and miftaken fads, and men are with difficulty convinced, that they have hitherto been deceived in what they looked upon as axioms and uncontro-verted truths.

Pardon me for any credits I may have missed. No doubt many are the people who could be credited with bringing such profound wisdom from yesteryear, in to the present time.
Also pardon any errors in my efforts, I am a lowly person not taught nor esteemed in the halls of men, a simple laymen of limited understanding according to men.
